Section Forensic Social Work
Goals and Contents
The section "forensic social work" aims to bring together, bundle, and further develop the different methods, concepts, and fields of working with delinquents and of working in crime prevention. This section is in the process of being established, and invites interested parties to join their efforts in the areas of:
forensic psychiatry,
probation help,
assisting youth who have been charged with committing a crime,
voluntary aid for delinquents,
treatment options for perpetrators who are mentally ill, who are sex offenders, or who have committed violent crimes,
prison systems,
social therapy institutions
in order to join the conversations and the development of a graduate course of study in forensic social work. In particular, we work with providers of relevant further education programs and Master's programs. Clinical social workers work with and provide services for criminals in many different contexts; accordingly, their work differs with respect to organization, training, and presenting their work to professional audiences and larger publics. Nonetheless, shared fundamental approaches and methods (acknowledging the delinquent's biography, reconstructing the crime, crime prevention, and criminal prognoses) create a basis for working across different fields and institutions. The demands placed on professionals working in forensic social work have increased in recent years. At the same time, it is important to keep up to date with international developments in our field (e.g., in forensic social work in the US).
The section
selects theoretical foundations of forensic social work to enable practitioners to apply them increasingly to their work;
identifies international developments (e.g., Clinical Social Work in the US, M.A. programs in Switzerland, Forensic Social Work Research in Australia) and therefore supports efforts to develop forensic social work in Germany;
presents institutions, continuing education courses, and individuals and approaches that are relevant to forensic social work theory and practice, therefore aiding the institutionalization of forensic social work;
develops networks of individuals who are actively involved in the practice and teaching of forensic social work.
Group members participate by
developing the section, recruiting new members;
contacting members of the group via e-mail or newsgroups;
discussing and documenting methods that are specific to forensic social work;
developing the foundations for a graduate course of study in forensic social work;
identifying relevant materials and literature;
analyzing further education programs;
developing a training canon for »forensic social work«;
implementing a course of study for forensic social work at the professional and policy level.
Materials
An extensive collection of relevant literature is currently being developed; the list is continually updated and published. Supplementary additions are always welcome.
